Preparation (Before Cutting)
Clear debris and leaves: Remove any leaves, branches, or other debris that may have accumulated on your lawn over the winter.
Check for frost damage: Inspect your lawn for any signs of frost damage, such as brown patches or bare spots. If necessary, apply a frost repair product to help repair damaged areas.
Aerate your lawn: If you have heavy clay or compacted soil, consider aerating your lawn to improve drainage and help prevent thatch buildup.
Beginning of the Year Maintenance Tasks
Mow the lawn: When the grass is dry and the temperature is above 4°C (39°F), it's time to mow your lawn. Cut at a height of around 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 in) to promote healthy growth.
Edge carefully: Use a sharp edging tool to tidy up around trees, garden beds, and paths.
Scarify (dethatch): Use a scarifier or a fork to remove dead grass, moss, and debris from the lawn. This helps promote healthy growth and prevents thatch buildup.
Fertilise: Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10 NPK) to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth.
Apply a moss and weed killer: If you have moss or weeds, now is the time to treat them with a suitable product.
Check for pests and diseases: Inspect your lawn for signs of pests or diseases, such as slugs, snails, or fungal infections.
Water wisely: Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to waterlogged soil and encourage weed growth.
Additional Tips
Monitor weather forecasts: Be prepared for extreme weather conditions, such as frost, snow, or heavy rain.
Use a winter mulch: Apply a winter mulch to protect your lawn from frost and extreme temperatures.
Consider overseeding: If you want to improve the density and color of your lawn, consider overseeding at the beginning of the year.
By utilising these tips, you'll set your lawn up for success as it comes out of winter and into the growing season!
